If you do not have a multi-seat subscription, see (Multi-Seat Subscriptions) Purchase My First Multi-Seat Subscription.
As the owner of a multi-seat subscription, you can either manage the subscription by yourself (purchase more seats, renew the subscription, and more) or choose another person as the new subscription owner.
Before You Start Ownership Transfer
Before you start transferring your multi-seat subscription to a new owner, please check the following.
Please make sure that the new owner doesn’t have a multi-seat subscription for the products that you are about to transfer. For example, if you are transferring a multi-seat Audiate and Video Review subscription, and the new owner has any of these products in their Direct orders, they will not be able to accept your subscription.
As the subscription owner (Account A), you can initiate the transfer. However, when viewing your invitation, the person that you selected as the new owner (Account B) will not have the option to accept your invitation.
Instead, they will be prompted to:
- Decline the invitation and provide you with a different email address.
- Or, contact Sales to get their current subscription canceled, so that they can accept your invitation.
The logic described in this section only applies to multi-seat subscriptions (direct orders).
Let’s say you have a multi-seat Audiate subscription that you purchased via our sales team, and you want to transfer it to a person who has a 1-seat Audiate subscription purchased in the online store. In this case, the person can accept the invitation and become the new owner.
The conflict about the transfer will only occur if you try to transfer a multi-seat Audiate subscription to a person who already has a multi-seat Audiate subscription of their own.
When you transfer a multi-seat subscription to a new owner, the pre-transfer invoices generated for this subscription stay linked to your account. As a result, you cannot transfer a subscription if you have an unpaid invoice, even if that invoice is not related to the subscription that you are trying to transfer.
To sum up, let's say you purchased three multi-seat subscriptions with a purchase order. You have an unpaid invoice related to subscription #1, while subscriptions #2 and 3 are paid. Until that invoice is paid, you cannot initiate the transfer for any of the three multi-seat subscriptions.
Start Ownership Transfer
After you make sure that the future owner does not have a multi-seat subscription for the products that you are about to transfer, and all of your invoices for multi-seat purchases are paid, you can start transferring your multi-seat subscription to a new owner. It is possible to cancel the transfer until your invitation is accepted.
Expand the sections below for more details.
- Visit manage.techsmith.com and sign in to your TechSmith account.
- Select Direct orders.
- (If you have multiple subscriptions) On the Subscriptions page, select the subscription that you would like to transfer.
- Under the subscription selector, click Manage ownership.
- Enter the email address of the new subscription owner and click Submit.
If an error occurs, or if the Manage ownership dialog looks different, see the Why can’t I start ownership transfer? section in this article. - Review the confirmation and click Close.
The subscription status is In transfer, which means the following:
- Until the person accepts the invitation, you can view and manage the subscription as usual.
- You can revoke the invitation at any time. Next to the person’s email address, click Remove (
).
After the person accepts the invitation and becomes the new owner, the subscription data and owners’ details are protected in the following way.

Cancel Ownership Transfer

- Visit manage.techsmith.com and sign in to your TechSmith account.
- Select Direct orders.
- (If you have multiple subscriptions) On the Subscriptions page, select the subscription for which you would like to cancel the transfer.
- Click Manage ownership and next to the email, click Remove (
).
The invitation becomes inactive, and the person whose email address you removed can no longer view the subscription details in Direct orders > Invitations.

No, the new owner receives the subscription in the same state as it was under the previous owner. Both during and after the ownership transfer:
- The users that had assigned seats still have those seats assigned, so their use of the product remains uninterrupted.
- Also, the seat managers that were assigned by the previous owner remain assigned and can manage seats as usual.
After the ownership transfer, the previous owner cannot manage the subscription anymore, and the new owner receives full control over the subscription, including seat assignments and seat managers.
What's the difference between adding a seat manager and transferring the subscription to a new owner?
If you would like to fully hand over your multi-seat subscription to someone else, you can transfer the subscription to a new owner.
If you would like to remain in charge of purchases, cancelations, and renewals, you can remain the subscription owner and add one or more seat managers who will manage seat assignments. See (Multi-Seat Subscriptions) Add or Remove a Seat Manager.
You cannot transfer your subscription to a new owner in the following cases:
![]() |
You purchased a 1-seat subscription in the online store. At manage.techsmith.com, you can transfer the subscriptions that are listed in your Direct orders. As for your Online store orders, you can add a seat manager or reassign a seat to someone else by yourself. If you would like to appoint a new owner for the products that you purchased in the online store, please contact our Customer Support team. |
|
An unpaid invoice is associated with your account for multi-seat subscriptions. Please make sure that all invoices for all of your multi-seat subscriptions are paid, and then try again. See (Multi-Seat Subscriptions) View and Pay My Invoices. |
|
Your multi-seat account is blocked. You can view the corresponding hint: “Subscription cannot be transferred because the current owner is blocked”. See (Multi-Seat Subscriptions) Unblock an Account. |
|
You are transferring a multi-seat subscription with auto-renewal on, and the person who should become the new owner is tax-exempt. You can view the corresponding message: “To transfer the subscription to this user, first deactivate auto-renewal. Error code: 301”. |
|
Your multi-seat subscription contains a product with unsupported settings. Until our team resolves this issue, your subscription is view-only and cannot be transferred to a new owner. You receive the corresponding message: “Cannot update subscription: product or rate plan contains unsupported settings. Error code: 290”. If you need to make an urgent ownership transfer, please contact Sales. |
|
Person who should become the new owner has reached the max number of subscriptions or cannot be selected as the new owner for some other reason. You can view the corresponding error: “Sorry, the user with this email is unavailable. Error code: 182”. To resolve this issue, ask the person to provide you with a different email address. |
|
The person's multi-seat account is canceled. You receive the corresponding message: “Cannot complete the operation: customer account is canceled. Error code: 288”. To resolve this issue, ask the person to provide you with a different email address. |
This may occur if you initiated ownership transfer to a person, but after this, the person deleted their TechSmith account.
The person can no longer accept the invitation to become a new owner, so you are recommended to cancel the ownership transfer to the deleted user, and then initiate the transfer to a different email address.
After you cancel the ownership transfer, we do not send any email notifications, and this event is not shown in Direct orders > History. However, the person who was selected as the new owner can no longer view the subscription details in Direct orders > Invitations.
